You know how it was always Rapunzel’s dream to “see the floating lights”? Well, since Disney’s Tangled premiered in 2010, planning a party around this theme was a dream of ours.
Everything about this movie makes it an incredible theme to design, style and plan for; from the plethora of activities Rapunzel repeats daily locked inside her tower to the festive flag bunting seen in the Kingdom of Corona (spoiler alert: Rapunzel’s actual home-sweet-home).
For inspiration, we started with the opening song sung by Rapunzel herself: “When Will My Life Begin?” In this song, Rapunzel sings about what she does to occupy her time every morning, like sweeping the floor and reading books (look closely in this scene and you’ll see she only has three books: Botany, Cooking, and Geology).
We recreated many of these elements in our styling, like using a real cast iron skillet for chocolate chip cookies (which Rapunzel is seen baking, and of course later seen swinging her frying pan in self-defense), and hiding white chocolate “blondies” inside boxes replicated to look like her actual books.
We made several hand-painted pieces from the Tangled movie for this event, including the wood sign marking the location of ‘The Snuggly Duckling’ pub, kingdom flags, and the piece de resistance, a 5’ x 4’ replica of Rapunzel’s tower painting of the floating lights!
As guests made their entrance into the party, they were greeted by Rapunzel’s tower, thanks to Backlot Party Props. Hanging from the balcony above? Rapunzel’s hair, of course! And inside the party area, we strung up hand-painted Kingdom of Corona bunting, festive silk flowers (yay for reusables!) and actual lanterns (without the fire, of course).
Next, we designed a custom activity sheet for guests to check off — just like Rapunzel! — such as “sweep ‘til the floor’s all clean”, “brush and brush and brush my hair”, and “add a few more paintings to my gallery”.
Speaking of paintings, since this is such a beloved way for Rapunzel to pass time up in her tower, we had to include a paint activity for the kids. Inspired by the floating lights, an incredible instructor taught our group of ruffians how to channel their creative side with their own take-home 8” x 10” painted canvas.
And a Tangled party in Los Angeles wouldn’t be complete without a visit from Rapunzel herself! We staged “Blondie” behind Backlot’s tower window prop for her story and singing performances, truly immersing guests in the experience.
As you can see from the photos, Lila and her friends had the “best day ever”… just like Rapunzel!
